Collared Pratincole (Glareola pratincola) Perdiz-do-mar

One of my favourite species. Flying like a cross between a Swallow and a Tern, Collared Pratincoles arrive back from Africa in April and breed on dry, rough ground, normally close to water, leaving again late October. One is likely to see them both inland and on the coast and they have a high pitched two syllable call uttered in flight. They bob their heads on the ground and as a breeding display tip upwards onto their nose exposing their white belly and vent when landing.
