Red-knobbed Coot (Fulica cristata) Galeirão-de-crista

A resident though uncommon bird whose main stronghold in the Western Palearctic is Morocco with a small population in south eastern Spain, but the odd individual is seen in Portugal every year. The Red-knobbed Coot's preferred habitat is the same as for the Eurasian Coot with whom they co-exist in relative harmony. Diagnostics are two red knobs on the top of the head, the lack of a pointed wedge of black in front of the eye, a blueish tinge to the bill and the lack of a white trailing edge to the base of the wing.
