The Greater Flamingo is another species that is expanding and can be found without too much effort nowadays throughout southern Portugal. There have been attempts at breeding but these have been unsuccessful to date. Personally they are not my favourite species, though from a photographer's point of view they are iconic, especially in the late afternoon sun. However their quarrelsome croaking behaviour reminds me too much of drunken nightclub poseurs and I find them ugly too. However most people don't and I must admit that the stirring of the mud with their feet amuses me.
