(Eurasian) Spoonbill (Platalea leucorodia) Colhereiro

The Eurasian Spoonbill is never a difficult species to encounter in Portugal, though it is seldom found in great numbers. It prefers sheltered and shallow water, but can just as easily be found on inland lakes and ponds as it is on the coast. There are several sites in the Algarve that it seems never to leave, but at others, though it is a regular visitor, it can be absent for months at a time. Unmistakeable, even at long range, due to its sweeping side to side feeding motion. Quite often seen both inland and along the coast in groups of 10 - 20 individuals passing overhead in line-abreast or V formation. Juveniles have black tips to the primaries and pale bills.
