Barn Owl (Tyto alba) Coruja-das-torres

A widespread owl whose population is in see-saw conflict with that of Short-eared owls. Unmistakeably white in Portugal and with plenty of nesting sites in old farm buildings provided by the flight of agriculture workers to urban centres, Barn Owls are on the increase hereabouts. Often seen in the half-light of dawn or dusk hunting with silent wing-beats low over the fields.
