(Rufous-tailed) Rock Thrush (Monticola saxatilis) Melro-das-rochas

Rufous-tailed Rock Thrushes are omnivorous migratory birds seen on passage apart from the far north of Portugal. They prefer altitudes greater than 1500 mts, so one needs to find high hills and mountains to get a sight of them. Occasionally though, for example on migration, they descend to lower altitudes and one can obtain good views. This happens in the south of the country at Foia near Monchique during September.

The male is unmistakeable with his blue head and red chest, while females have a very "scaly" appearance. Their habits, such as perching in the open on prominent rocks, are similar to Blue Rock Thrushes, and, as they occur on migration in the same habitat as the latter, care should be taken if the bird is back-lit and colour distinction is difficult.
